Carrollton golf places fifth in OCTAGON

Carrollton and St. Pius Teams after the tournament

OCTAGON results from Mirror Lake GC - Lake Course (Villa Rica, GA): The 1st-ever OCTAGON, jointly hosted by Carrollton and St. Pius X, was held over this weekend. The tournament consisted of a Friday 9-hole "skins-style" competition and a Saturday 27-hole triple-elimination match play contest. Schools participating included 8 of the top teams around the State as well as perennial Alabama power, Auburn.

Auburn, Carrollton, Dalton, Greenbrier, LaFayette, LaGrange, St. Pius X, and Wayne County battled it out over the two days in a variety of singles, alternate shot, and four ball matches. The Trojans fought to a strong 5th place finish out of the consolation bracket, going 2-1 as a team on championship Saturday. The Trojans defeated Auburn 2 1/2* - 2 1/2 in a tiebreak and LaGrange 3 - 2, while falling to eventual Runner-Up Dalton 1 1/2 - 3 1/2. Mario Perezcassar III dominated in singles play, winning three matches and halving another. Cole New also enjoyed a strong showing, playing primarily at the #1 slot, by going 2 - 2 on the tournament. Clay Fontenot, Luke Pezold, Jacob Shadrix, Alex Shilling, and Will Griffith rounded out the team, each contributing points to the team effort.

Greenbrier, out of Augusta, played stellar golf the whole weekend. They earned the Championship title while going undefeated as team. Austen Heider (Greenbrier) was recognized as the "OCHO" individual Champion.

The OCTAGON is one of several unique events the Trojans are taking part in this spring, combining the efforts of partner schools (like St. Pius X) to give players the chance to test their skills against advanced teams in a variety of formats. The Trojan boys will be back in action next weekend at Oak Mountain CGC to take on the Newnan Cougars in the 3rd Annual McIntosh Match Play Cup.
