A Carrollton Elementary School teacher with a wealth of knowledge and experience in cheerleading will lead the cheerleading program for Carrollton City Schools following Brionna Lannom’s decision to step back as head coach.

Kelsey Shannon is moving into the role of head cheerleading coach.

A native of Fayette County, Shannon moved to Carrollton when she started college at the University of West Georgia. She cheered all four years and won two national championships with the Wolves. She received her Master’s degree from UWG in 2017.

Shannon is no stranger to coaching cheerleading. She previously assisted with Carrollton’s cheer program for eight years under former coaches Ryan McKinnon and Elizabeth Sanders.

During her time as an assistant coach, Shannon helped lead the Trojans to four state championship wins and seven region championship titles. She also coached football cheerleading at Carrollton Junior High School.

“I am so excited to be part of something bigger than myself,” said Shannon. “I am honored to be chosen to lead these young athletes in a sport that I share the same love and passion for. I can’t wait to build long-lasting relationships with the girls and their families.”

CHS Athletic Director Paul Fitz-Simons said he believes Shannon is a great fit for the job.

“I have known Coach Shannon for years and have seen first-hand what she is capable of as a coach,” he said. “I believe she will do a wonderful job leading our athletes and can’t wait to see what she accomplishes in her new role as the head cheerleading coach at CHS.”

Shannon and her husband, Steven, have three children: Griffin, Tucker, and Ellis. They reside in Carrollton.

“Being a coach at CHS is so special to me because it is the ultimate way to give back to the community in a positive way,” said Shannon. “I hope to be the best example in and out of the practice room for my athletes.”
