Friday night’s matchup between the Carrollton Trojans and the Westlake Lions was a back-and-forth affair at certain points. But there was no mistaking who was in control for all four quarters as head coach Joey King’s team delivered in a 63-27 home victory.

After the Trojans capped off their first possession with a four-yard touchdown by running back Kimauri Farmer, the Lions took very little time to get to the end zone themselves.

Westlake’s passing attack got hot early, putting together multiple chunk plays to set up a touchdown as the Lions hit pay dirt with quarterback Sean Smith finding wide receiver Travis Smith for a 53-yard touchdown. The game was tied at 7-7 roughly midway through the first quarter in the last time things would look remotely competitive for a while.

Then the Carrollton offense opened the floodgates, with Kai Callen responding with an 82-yard kickoff return that allowed the Trojans to take the 14-7 lead.

That was followed by a 43-yard touchdown catch by wide receiver AJ McNeil early in the second quarter and then a 34-yard touchdown pass from Lewis to wideout Kiyun Cofer.

But things really began to get out of hand for the Lions when they allowed Carrollton to convert on fourth down in the red zone following a poor punt that set the Trojans up at the Westlake 45-yard line to start the drive.

Running back Messiah Satterwhite brought the drive home with a two-yard touchdown run to give Carrollton a 35-7 lead with just over seven minutes remaining in first-half action.

That’s when it got interesting. It’s easy to see how much of a tear Carrollton was on, but suddenly, the Lions started to come on with some fight again.

That began with a three-yard touchdown run by running back Naeem Odeniyi in what was unexpectedly an action-packed one and a half minutes ahead of halftime.

Just 20 seconds after the Trojans got the ball back, Lewis sent a 58-yard scoring pass to McNeil. But the Lions snapped right back with another touchdown, this one a 22-yard pass from Sean Smith to Travis Smith to make it 42-21, where the score would sit at the half.

Westlake looked like it could hang in the mix when it got the ball first in the third quarter, despite being down by three scores. The Lions opened with a bang as Sean Smith hit Travis Smith for a big gain to bring the Lions down to the Trojans 5-yard line. Odeniyi did the honors on a three-yard touchdown run, cutting the Carrollton lead to 42-27.

But the defense continued to prove itself the fatal flaw for the Lions for the remainder of the game. The unit made a 39-yard touchdown catch by wide receiver Peyton Zachary look easy as soon as the ball was back in the hands of Lewis. Carrollton got back to the scoreboard once more as it was Zachary yet again with the 18-yard touchdown reception.

Tight end Zion Colley was the next Trojan to the end zone with a 25-yard touchdown catch. That sent Carrollton into video game numbers with a 63-27 lead early in the fourth quarter, where the final score would remain.

Carrollton will look to stay undefeated as it faces Chapel Hill in Grisham Stadium on Oct. 11.
