CARROLLTON, GA — The Carrollton High School girls wrestling team has claimed the GHSA Traditional Championship, joining an elite company of schools to win dual and traditional titles in the same season.

The team competed against 110 schools and had all six qualified wrestlers finish in the top five. The Trojans scored 103 points total; the next closest team scored 73.5. Bailey Moore and Maggie Dudley finished in fifth place, Journey Gray finished fourth, Sierha Lopes and Madison Cooley earned third place honors, and Johana Mejia claimed second.

Head Coach Allen Newton said the team’s hard work and persistence earned them this championship.

“I am so proud of our girls and coaching staff,” Newton said. “They continued to push themselves and work hard after winning duals. We were able to push six wrestlers through the toughest sectional in the state to give us a chance to compete, and our girls took advantage of it by every one of them making the podium.”

The Trojans have now won three out of the possible four state championships the GHSA offers over the past two years. Next season, they will aim to become the 10th school in history to win three straight dual titles and back to back traditional titles.
