CARROLLTON, GA — The Carrollton High School boys golf team claimed their first Trojan Invitational win after multiple record-breaking performances last Friday and Saturday.

For more than two decades, the Trojan Invitational has been one of the premiere tournaments throughout Georgia. Top teams from all over the state and even the southeast have come to compete in the event hosted at Sunset Hills Country Club. Originally known as the Carrollton Invitational, when it started in 1999, the 18-hole tournament transitioned to the Trojan Invitational in 2015, extending to a two-day, 36-hole format.

After round one, the Trojans held a ten-stroke lead in the tournament. Nine golfers scored 79 or lower, adding to a team score of 291. Senior Luke Able and junior Christopher Watts led the charge with 72, followed by freshman Davis Haas and Mackinnley Yarbrough, who shot 73 and 74, respectively.

The Trojans played the same song with a slightly different verse on Saturday, as freshman Mackinnley Yarbrough fired a tournament-low 69 to lead the Trojan charge. Yarbrough is now the only freshman golfer in CHS history to shoot under 70 in a tournament round. Able, Haas, Tristan Morin, and Edward Fleck all shot 74 to earn a team score of 291 for the Saturday round. The win was secured just in time for some players to make their way to the CHS junior/senior prom.

Head coach Jake Harris was proud of how his team competed over the weekend.

The team showed up and showed out at home, and being part of it was phenomenal," he said. "Every player in the lineup finished top-10 in the field. The Trojan is one of the premiere golf events in the high school golf season, and keeping the trophy in Carrollton for the first time is special.”

He also acknowledged the broad support that contributed to their success. "We are thankful for all the CHS athletes, students, club, and community members who supported us. Justin Japour and the Sunset Hills staff helped with setup and had the course in pristine condition."

Looking ahead, Harris shared his optimism for the upcoming competitions. "Hopefully, we continue to build momentum as we head into the state championship next month, and maybe we’ll surprise some people."

The Trojans wrap up their regular season on Tuesday, April 23, at the Muscogee County Invitational. They will then begin preparation for the two-day GHSA state championship at Sunset Hills Country Club on May 20 and 21.
